Film Output

Subject

A phototypesetting machine processed newspaper pages, producing negative film sheets in this output bin.

Description

Another stage in the technology of newspaper printing involved the use of phototypesetting in the Composing Room. Text was delivered from the news team to the dark room, an enclosed space with minimal light exposure for image processing. After the printers inside processed the photographic paper, pages were released through the film output slot for proofing and paste-up.
