Video Description

The video begins with a title slide featuring a line drawing of a figure depicting the handshapes and movement for the vocabulary term, typesetter. With both hands in a bent-5 handshape, the fingers on each hand wiggling, the signer depicts the typing on a keyboard at mid-torso. Next in a video recording, Diane Hause, a white older woman, defines the term in American Sign Language. She stands in front of a blue screen in a film studio.

When I joined The Washington Post, I started as a typesetter. That involved typing text into a machine onto long tape. The tape was fed into a monitor and hot press in another area. We had to learn how to read the tape, which was punched with holes, a code for the typed words. I would watch it and rewind the tape to correct any errors. You also had to keep an eye on the diameter of the tape – it needed to fit into the monitor machine for hot metal. So, you’d have to keep an eye on the other end of the tape to make sure it was the right size.
